Man U Without Ronaldo
The world’s best player walks out the door, so what does that mean to your club? According to Manchester United’s academy director Brian McClair, there hasn’t been any "post-Ronaldo crisis" at the famous club.
That said, United haven’t looked sharp in at times early this season. Notably, the loss to Burnley in August and despite a 2-1 win over Arsenal in their last match, they were outplayed for long stretches.
So it is difficult to say that life without Ronaldo is “great”, but Man U seem to moving on and are confident they’ll find their stride as the season progresses.
McClair said: "As far as everybody at Old Trafford is concerned the start of the season is going well. The team was always going to come under more scrutiny than usual after the departure of Ronaldo and what some saw as unspectacular activity in the transfer window.
"United have always hung in there around the top of the table until Christmas and then pushed on.
"To listen to some people you would think we are in some kind of post-Ronaldo crisis. All I will say is look at history and look at Sir Alex Ferguson’s record."
Meanwhile, Ronaldo isn’t unfamiliar to struggles in his new uniform. He is taking heat early this season with Real Madrid and while the criticism hasn’t reached above rumblings, it is creating some discomfort for the fans and club.
Espanola captain Ivan de la Pena spoke out on the subject, "Cristiana Ronaldo doesn't have to prove anything," Ivan de la Pena stated in an interview.
"I saw him play against Depurative La Coruna and I liked him. The fact is any Real Madrid player can turn a game: [Kari] Enema, Kaka, Cristiana, Raul...
"Xebio Alonso gives the team a lot of options," the 33-year-old added.
We’ll keep an eye on how the post-Ronaldo era progresses.
